Every mobile crane lift in Qatar starts on the ground. A crane can be perfectly maintained, correctly configured and operated by a certified operator, but if an outrigger sinks or punches through the surface, the lift is compromised. At GlobalSources Qatar we treat ground support as part of the lift plan, not an afterthought. This article explains how our crane hire team sets up mobile cranes and boom trucks safely on soft or uneven ground, and why we use Saferig outrigger pads from our sister company Diode Trading.
Many work sites in Qatar are not built on firm, prepared ground. Coastal and industrial areas such as Ras Laffan and Mesaieed include reclaimed land, compacted fill, sandy soils and areas with a high water table. Road shoulders, landscaped areas and newly backfilled trenches can look solid but give way under concentrated loads. When a crane lifts, most of the load is transferred through one or two outriggers. That load is concentrated on a small float, and the pressure under it can be far higher than the ground can safely carry.
The result of poor ground support can range from an outrigger slowly settling out of level to a sudden punch-through that tips the crane. Both are avoidable with the right preparation.
Before mobilising a crane, our team works through a simple sequence:
For quick checks, Diode Trading provides a free outrigger pad size calculator that applies the same principle.
Timber cribbing and steel plates are still common on sites, but both have drawbacks. Timber absorbs water, splits and degrades in heat and sun. Steel plates are heavy, need lifting equipment to place and can corrode. Saferig pads are made from UHMWPE (ultra-high molecular weight polyethylene), which offers practical advantages for crane crews:
On site, our operators and riggers follow a consistent routine. The ground is inspected for voids, soft spots, buried services and recent excavations. Loose material is removed and the area is levelled. Pads are centred under each outrigger float so the load is spread evenly, and the crane is levelled using the outriggers, not by packing uneven material under the pads. During the lift, the team watches for any settlement. If movement is seen, the lift stops and the ground support is reassessed.
Because GlobalSources Qatar and Diode Trading are sister companies, clients can arrange mobile crane hire with certified operators and the right ground support from one team. This reduces the risk of a crane arriving on site without suitable pads, and keeps the lift documentation in one place.
If you are planning a lift in Doha, Ras Laffan, Mesaieed or anywhere in Qatar and are unsure about ground conditions, contact our team. Share the crane type, the heaviest lift and what you know about the ground, and we will advise on the crane and ground support needed.
